Shoes that Help You Shop and Not Drop

During this busy season when patients will likely be spending long hours at the mall and standing on cashier lines buying holiday gifts, we at Paul Klein, DPM, FACFAS, want to help patients be proactive about protecting their feet. The very best way to ensure hours of bargain hunting without ending up with sore feet is by choosing the right pair of shoes. Below are some footwear suggestions we hope will help:

  • Choose shoes that fit. It’s amazing how many people are walking around in shoes that are too small for their feet—up to 90%, some studies estimate. Shoes with narrow toe boxes that squeeze your toes together increase the risk and aggravation to deformities such as bunions and hammertoes and also create a scenario where ingrown toenails are more likely. It’s a good idea to get your foot professionally measured periodically to see if your foot size has changed.

  • Check for signs of wear. Although it’s a smart idea to reach for a pair of shoes or sneakers that have been comfortable for a long time, make sure they are not stretched out or starting to fall apart with loose stitching or worn spots on the sole. These can increase the risk of blisters and injuries.

  • Be supportive. Good arch support will help you prevent heel pain, particularly if you have flat feet or plantar fasciitis. If our podiatrist, Dr. Paul G. Klein, has prescribed a custom orthotic device, be sure to wear it for your shopping day.

  • Go for function, not fashion. No high heels over two inches if you are going to be on your feet for a long period of time. Be wary of fashion boots as well, they are notorious for not providing much support.

  • Don’t ignore foot pain. If your foot or ankle starts to hurt while you’re out shopping, take a break and put your feet up if possible.
