Taking care of your joints doesn’t have to involve big changes in your lifestyle. Below are 10 easy ways to protect the health of your joints and reduce your risk of arthritis.
Change positions frequently. Sitting or standing for long periods of time can be bad for your joints. If you’re on your feet all day for work, take breaks and sit when you can. The same goes for a job where you are sitting all day, only in reverse—be sure to get up and walk around at least once every hour.
Have fish for dinner tonight. Fish high in omega-3 fatty acids—usually the cold-water varieties like salmon and mackerel—can help reduce pain and inflammation in the joints and help to keep them healthy. No time to cook? Fish oil also comes in capsules.
Keep coffee breaks to a minimum. Too much caffeine can weaken bones and joints.
Lose your high heels. A 3-inch heel stresses your foot joints 7 times more than a 1-inch heel.
Use a smaller plate. This will guarantee smaller portions which can help you maintain a healthy weight. Carrying extra weight causes joints to wear out faster.
Have an orange. Whether it’s in the form of fruit or juice (or supplement), research shows that vitamin C can help reduce your risk for osteoarthritis.
Don’t speed. Injured joints are more likely to develop arthritis in the future. Reduce your accident risk.
Find an exercise buddy. Regular exercise keeps joints healthy. Working out with a friend increases your chances ofsticking with a fitness routine.
Take a bath. A warm bath can help relieve muscle tensions and joint aches.
